Laser Unused for a Year? How Long Downtime Can Lead to Expensive Cooling System Repairs

A pause in treatments does not remove the need for technical checks. Coolant and tubing condition still matter during downtime. A LightSheer DESIRE repair in Wrocław illustrates the work involved in a contaminated circuit; it does not establish that this particular device stood unused for a year.

What happens to the cooling system during long downtime?

Depending on the coolant composition, system materials and storage conditions, mineral deposits, sediment and other contamination may develop. A long break can also allow a falling coolant level or deteriorating fluid condition to go unnoticed. Lack of daily use is not evidence that the circuit remains sound.

Downtime alone does not always cause scale. Previous condition, service history and compliance with the manufacturer’s coolant requirements also matter. Yellow tubing or visible sediment cannot establish the exact chemical composition of contamination. It should not automatically be attributed to tap water or a particular substance.

Why is disrupted circulation a problem?

Coolant needs to collect heat and carry it through the cooling circuit. Insufficient flow reduces heat removal; temperatures may rise and the device may report a fault or interrupt operation. Low coolant and contaminated tubing need assessment rather than simply clearing a warning.

If a laser is not cooling its handpiece, the handpiece itself is not necessarily the cause. Diagnostics should include the circuit and its connections. “ET BP over temperature” is a symptom to investigate, not a universal instruction to replace a particular part.

A real example: Lumenis LightSheer DESIRE

During a repair in Wrocław, the device displayed “ET BP over temperature”. Disassembly revealed insufficient coolant, contaminated tubing and disrupted circulation. Specialists replaced the tubing included in the repair and the coolant, removed dust, and checked cooling after reassembly. Circulation and system operation were restored.

This case illustrates the consequences of contamination and the scope of service work. The duration of any previous downtime is unknown, so a year without use is not presented as the cause of this device’s fault.

Why is tubing replacement expensive?

Tubes account for only part of the cost. Access to the circuit in a compact LightSheer DESIRE requires considerable disassembly. A technician must reach the connections, remove the old tubes, install replacements and check the system after reassembly.

Laser cooling tubing replacement therefore includes diagnostic, disassembly, installation and checking time. The extent of contamination and access to components affect the labour involved. The price of another repair cannot replace an assessment of the actual device; the unknown cost of this case is not quoted.

How should you look after a laser that is temporarily unused?

  • Check the equipment’s technical condition during treatment breaks.
  • Monitor coolant level and condition in the way permitted by the instructions; leave internal access to service personnel.
  • Use only coolant approved by the manufacturer for the specific model.
  • Perform preventive start-up checks according to that device’s instructions.
  • Where the manufacturer permits regular start-ups, consider a check every 1–2 weeks after agreeing a schedule with the service team. This is a possible monitoring arrangement, not a verified Lumenis interval.
  • Do not fire laser pulses unnecessarily or outside a manufacturer-approved procedure.
  • Check the cooling system before returning to treatments after a long break.

Regular checks can help identify coolant loss, leaks or warnings earlier. They do not replace maintenance or remove existing deposits. If an overheating warning appears, stop using the device and arrange diagnostics; do not run more treatments to “exercise” the circuit.

Prevention costs less than extensive repairs

Checking coolant and cooling takes significantly fewer resources than fully dismantling a device and replacing contaminated tubing. Maintenance timing and scope should follow the instructions, service history and equipment condition.
