> How does a damaged cable or connector affect handpiece operation? Symptoms, causes, cable care and an RSL repair example from Warsaw.

The screen works and settings are available, but the handpiece cuts out. The cause may lie in the connection bent and moved every day. We explain why the cable deserves as much attention as the device itself.

## Why is the handpiece cable part of the working system?

A handpiece does not operate independently. In many designs, its cable carries power, control commands and sensor connections. Each requires a correct connection. A working screen therefore does not confirm that power and communication reach the handpiece.

Wire and pin assignments depend on the model. Do not copy a diagram from a similar-looking device or assume a mechanically compatible plug is electrically compatible.

## How does the cable carry power and signals?

Power conductors carry current to loads in the handpiece. Other wires may carry commands, sensor information or data between electronic circuits. A connector allows disconnection at a defined point, but every contact must perform its intended function.

The device design determines what happens when a connection is lost. Interrupted motor power, a missing sensor signal and communication failure need not produce identical symptoms.

## What happens with poor contact?

A worn, loose or damaged contact can interrupt a circuit. The user may notice a stopped function, error message or intermittent handpiece response. In some circuits, increased contact resistance can cause voltage drop under load and contact heating.

**Not every damaged contact causes reduced power.** The device may stop, display an error or behave erratically. The effect cannot be determined without knowing which circuit is affected.

## Why might rollers stop turning?

If a device uses electrically driven rollers, loss of drive power or control may stop them. Lack of rotation alone does not establish cable damage: the drive, controller or mechanical parts may be responsible.

In other heads, spheres rotate freely against the skin while the drive produces vibration. “The rollers do not turn” must therefore be interpreted against the actual design rather than assuming identical mechanisms in every RSL device.

## Unstable operation and parameter problems

A screen setting is a command to the device. It does not independently prove that the handpiece executes it correctly. Signal or supply disturbances may prevent some models reaching the requested conditions or trigger protection.

Do not increase settings to compensate for instability. Stop use according to the instructions and tell the service team when the problem occurs, which handpiece is affected and the exact screen message.

## Can a cable look intact yet be damaged inside?

Yes. The outer sheath and internal metal conductors have different roles. Repeated bending at one point can damage conductors while insulation appears intact. Cable entries into plugs and handpieces are often particularly stressed.

[LAPP explains cable strain relief](https://www.lapp.com/en_US/us/products/properties-technologies/mechanical-properties/strain-relief/e/000021): pulling and bending forces can load conductors and contacts. Visual inspection matters but does not replace electrical diagnostics.

## What commonly stresses cables and connectors?

- **Sharp bending:** a tight loop near the handpiece concentrates stress at one point.

- **Pulling:** moving the device by its cable transfers force to mountings and contacts.

- **Twisting:** rotating the handpiece without allowing free cable movement builds up stress.

- **Connector wear:** frequent disconnection, contamination or incorrect insertion can deteriorate contacts.

These are general damage mechanisms. They do not establish the cause of an individual fault or assign blame to the operator.

## Why not dismantle the connector yourself?

An apparently simple connector may contain several circuits with different functions. Incorrect pin connections, inadequate insulation or unsuitable strain relief can cause another fault. Matching plug diameter is insufficient for selecting a replacement.

Without appropriate qualifications and documentation, do not open connectors, bridge contacts or test a damaged cable by moving it during treatment. Leave repairs to a service specialist.

## How should the cable be cared for daily?

- Let it lie freely, without trapping it beneath wheels or furniture.

- Return the handpiece to its intended holder so it does not hang by the cable.

- Do not pull the device or plug by the cable.

- Connect and disconnect the handpiece only as instructed.

- Use approved cleaning methods; do not flood the contacts.

- Report cracks, looseness, unusual heating or intermittent operation.

## Example: urgent RSL repair in Warsaw

During an urgent visit to Warsaw, Laser Tech Service repaired a damaged handpiece cable and replaced an RSL device connector. We restored a working connection between handpiece and device. This is the confirmed work scope; the possible symptoms discussed above are not a list of symptoms from this job.
